Essential Oils - The Basics

The thing I get asked the most about on instagram is essential oils.

Let’s be real though—essential oils have gotten more and more popular in the last few years. It’s basically taking over everyone’s social media feeds, and there’s a reason why. THEY ARE AWESOME.

My “oil journey” began about five years ago, and btw, I don’t consider myself an expert in any way, but I’m an avid user and know the very basics.

Essential Oil Basics

So here’s some common oil terms:

Carrier Oil - An oil (think fractionated coconut oil) that you use to dilute your essential oil or that helps your skin absorb it quicker.

Diffuse - A way to experience the aromatic benefits of your essential oil(s). You will need a diffuser to “diffuse”

Topically - Applying the oil directly onto the skin

Aromatically - Putting an oil through a diffuser

Internally - Ingesting an oil either in a vegetable capsule or putting a drop or two in your water

What oils should you start with (my faves):

  • Lavender

  • On Guard (DoTerra) or Thieves (Young Living)

  • Lemon

  • Tea Tree Oil or Melaleuca

Getting Started With Essential Oils

Getting Started

with essential oils

My favorite places to get quality oils

  1. DoTerra - there are no filler or synthetic oils added. They are pure and the highest quality you can get. They are all organic, verified pure, free of fillers and pesticides. There is also harvest the oils in their natural habitat which provides jobs to people all over the world, many in third world countries. You can ingest any of their oils—they’re that safe to use.

  2. Thrive Market - you can’t really beat the price point here. The oils I have received have all had a food label on them, and had only one ingredient in the oil (no fillers). The bottles are also significantly larger than other oil company’s, so you’re getting way more oil for less money. Make sure you get the thrive brand. I don’t know much more about these unfortunately so I don’t ingest or use them topically. I only diffuse or clean with them.

  3. Young Living - I started with YL oils and still use them. They are all organic. YL has been around for over 20 years, and their quality is awesome. They own all the farms they harvest from and have a huge selection of oils and products. You cannot ingest all of their oils, however, they have a special line of oils that are ingestible.

How to diffuse essential oils:

Fill your diffuser with purified water and add a few drops of your favorite oil. Then turn it on! It’s that easy!

My favorite oils to diffuse:

  • Grapefruit

  • Grapefruit and Lavender (a few drops of each)

  • Lavender

  • On Guard (DoTerra oil)

  • Thieves (Young Living oil)

  • Breathe (DoTerra oil)

  • Tea Tree Oil (Thrive Market)

…and that’s it! What are you favorite oils to diffuse?
